Turbidostats are defined as continuous cell culture devices where the dilution rate is set through feedback from monitoring of the cell density.
Turbidostats are ideal for directed evolution experiments where cells are grown at a constant density in order to select for faster growth under unchanging conditions. Custom, open source turbidostat designs exist at price ranges far below commercial sources, however these designs are difficult to work with, still cost on the order of thousands of dollars and have difficulty dealing with changing light conditions. Additionally, no cheap, open source solution exists for the culturing of photosynthetic organisms which require controlled lighting to grow.
